Bassogog's Injury Retires CSL Star for Shenhua

Bassogog's injury has ended his career at the Shanghai Shenhua football club, according to reports on Wednesday.

The Brazilian forward sustained a serious knee injury in last week's Chinese Super League (CSL) match against Beijing Guoan and was taken off the pitch immediately after the incident.

It is understood that Bassogog will require surgery and will miss several months of action.

Shenhua have confirmed that the player will be out for "a long time" but have not revealed the extent of his injuries.

The 28-year-old had been in fine form for Shenhua this season, scoring four goals in eight appearances for the club.

He joined the club from Corinthians in January 2019 and quickly established himself as one of their key players.

However, his injury could be a setback for Shenhua, who currently sit second in the CSL table with 46 points from 25 games.

They face fierce rivals Guangzhou Evergrande in their next game on Sunday and will need all hands on deck if they hope to maintain their title challenge.

In Bassogog's absence, Shenhua will turn to other players to fill his shoes and provide cover up front.

Meanwhile, the news comes just days after another Brazilian striker, Diego Tavares, suffered a serious knee injury during a training session and is also expected to miss several months.

It remains to be seen whether Shenhua can cope without such key strikers and how their remaining matches will pan out.

For now, it seems that Bassogog's injury has put paid to his chances of a return to the CSL for the rest of the season.

But with the league still in full swing, there may yet be opportunities for him to make a comeback in the future.
